Listen, who are you, in fact? Assignment 3
In response to Hugo’s final monologue in Vaclav Havel’s play, The Garden Party (1963), I decided to utilize light and shadow to represents the changing facets of a person. Colour can be interpreted in a number of ways such as to suggest a mood, or express a feeling for example as well as to add emphasis. Colour can also enhance features such as in the last photo the pink light draws attention to the blueness of my eyes. Shadow on the other hand I used to hide and obscure my face to change the perception of the portrait. Again this leads to changing the feeling of the face that I portray. My inspiration was based upon Hugo's monologue addressing the changing qualities of man, "...that B may be B, but
equally it may be A and C; just as C may be not only C, but also A, B, and D;" and "...as we all know, it
is necessary today somehow to try and understand also that which was yesterday,
because—who knows?—it may come back again tomorrow." My concept was to show these changes through a series of self portraits the same but at the same time not. While all me they showcase different poses, expressions and moods.
