Response to "Inside the White Cube" by Brian O'Doherty
O'Doherty explores the significance of the white cube- a quintessential gallery space. He discusses how this backdrop becomes an active participant in the artistic dialogue. These neutral environments become part of the artworks themselves as they shape the viewers response. The blank canvas of these spaces takes any historical context away from the art work so it stands on its own merit as it relates to other works of art sharing the space. O'Doherty explores the relationship between finance and social context vs. artistic expression. Beyond the physical space O'Doherty's critique encompasses power structures, hierarchies, and commercial influences, shedding light on their impact on the perception and valuation of art. I never really thought of the gallery space as a white cube before however, after reading this work I can see how my perception of the art could have been influenced and framed by the space.
